Summons and Companions

These rules apply whenever a class feature summons a creature or grants a companion that fights beside you, unless that feature says otherwise.

Command and Initiative

A creature you summon with a class feature acts on your initiative, immediately after your turn. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to command any or all creatures you control from that feature to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, Help, or Hide action, or another action that feature allows. If you don’t issue a command, a summoned creature takes the Dodge action and moves to avoid danger.

Concentration and Instances

Unless a feature states otherwise, you can have only one instance of that summoning feature active at a time, and the summoning requires your concentration. Your concentration ends as normal, and the summon ends when your concentration ends.

Attack Damage

When a feature refers to attack damage, it means damage dealt by an attack that uses an attack roll. Damage from hazards, difficult terrain, spells that require a saving throw but no attack roll, and other effects that are not attack rolls is not attack damage unless a feature says otherwise. Individual features may grant immunity or special interactions with non-attack damage.
